FAQ

  • I'm really not sure I want to start therapy..but I also don't feel good in my life..

It's completely normal to feel uncertain about starting therapy, especially when you don’t feel good in your life. Therapy can be a space to explore those feelings at your own pace without pressure or judgment. You don’t have to have all the answers before you begin—many people start therapy precisely because they want to understand themselves better and find ways to feel more balanced. It’s okay to take small steps and see if it feels like the right fit for you. Your well-being is important, and reaching out for support can be a meaningful way to take care of yourself.

  • How should I prepare for my first session?

Please complete all intake paperwork in the portal at least 24 hours before your session.

To prepare emotionally for your first therapy session, you can:

~ Identify your goals (What is bringing you to therapy? What do you wish was different in your life?)
~ Gather relevant background info (medical history, past therapy, key events), but don’t worry, we will ask the relevant questions!
~ Write down any questions or concerns about therapy and bring them to discuss.
~ Confirm appointment details (you can see your scheduled time in the portal) and arrange a private, calm space if meeting virtual.
~ Remember, the first session is mainly about getting to know each other and setting the foundation.

You can also just come as you are—no special preparation needed (except the paperwork…don’t forget to do that!)

  • What is the first session like?

The first session serves as an intake, during which your therapist collects detailed background information through thoughtful questions and careful note-taking. You will have the opportunity to discuss your personal history, current concerns, and specific goals for therapy. Confidentiality and its boundaries are clearly explained to ensure you feel safe. Additionally, you are encouraged to ask any questions about the therapist’s approach or methods.

Intake typically lasts between 50 and 55 minutes and is designed to build trust and establish a solid foundation for a personalized and effective therapeutic plan moving forward.

  • How long do sessions last?

Talk therapy sessions typically last approximately 50-55 minutes, depending on insurance requirements.

The length of time someone may be in treatment for therapy varies depending on individual needs and treatment goals. The overall duration of therapy can range from short term (a few months) to longer term. There is no “one size fits all” and our therapists will work to ensure that the time being spent in therapy is aligned with your goals.

  • What are ongoing sessions like?

A lot of this depends on you and your therapist! Each of our therapists have their own unique style and modalities of practice. We work hard to match your goals and desires with the right therapist at our practice. Your therapist will talk to you about your goals throughout treatment and will adjust treatment as able to impact your dynamic goals.

For the most part, our therapists use an open, semi-structured or loosely structured approach to therapy which leans heavily on what you want to talk about that day.

  • What if I don't want to continue?

Treatment is voluntary and you are able to end treatment at any time.

If you are considering ending treatment, we encourage you to talk to your therapist in order to figure out any underlying reasons and determine the right discharge plan for you moving forward.
